Preparing and Painting Battleground Scenery The Battleground Scenery Range is manufactured in the United Kingdom from high density urethane foam. The material is light, strong and easily cut, sawn, drilled, sanded and even screwed together. Most household glues can be used to join the parts together. PVA wood glue is one of the most common and works very well provided sufficient drying time is allowed. As a part of the manufacturing process the models come out of the moulds with a coating of mould release agent. This needs to be removed before you do anything else. We advise washing the model in a mild solution of detergent or soda. Undercoat using a suitable spray colour, the best results are obtained by doing a light 'dusting' coat first, followed by a heavier coat. Once the undercoat has dried then you can wetbrush the main body detail with your chosen colour. Once that coat has dried (very soon with acrylic paints) you can drybrush in a highlighting colour to pick out the fine detail and add depth to the model. Finally pick out the smaller details using a good quality brush and acrylic or enamel paints. Your model will look pretty good by now but most models will benefit from the use of some textured paint or flock and scenic materials. Once you are satisfied with the paint job you should finish with one or two coats of varnish. Gloss varnish will provide better protection, whilst matt varnish will tend to look better. Of course you can always do both (gloss first of course!) |
